Saratoga Studies:
Unraveling Threads from “Silver Blaze”
and “The Greek Interpreter”.
Edited by Candace Lewis and Roger Donway.
“Silver Blaze,” one of the most popular of the Sherlockian adventures, has been paired with another favorite, “The Greek Interpreter,” in this new collection of essays assembled to mark the running of the “Silver Blaze” Race at Saratoga Raceway in August 2012. This gathering in Saratoga Springs, New York, started by The Baker Street Irregulars in 2000, revived a tradition at New York City area racetracks stretching back over half a century.
In this volume, the authors follow threads within the Sherlockian adventures in unearthing new discoveries. Susan Vizoskie examines Mrs. Beeton, the influential writer and editor of Beeton’s Book of Household Management, who grew up at the racetrack at Epsom. Ben Vizoskie solves Sherlock Holmes’s calculation of the speed of the train based upon the telegraph it passes. The Hon. Albert Rosenblatt discusses problems relating to “The Law’s Delay” and obtaining a search warrant. The volume’s editors, Candace Lewis and Roger Donway, both present in-depth examinations of “Vernet, the French artist,” renowned for painting horses, and mentioned in “The Greek Interpreter.”
This beautifully produced volume includes 20 black and white and 16 color illustrations.
